Snow Emergencies Declared; Portion of Route 322 Closed

As a winter storm brought heavier-than-expected snow to the area, PennDOT closed one Centre County highway and Centre Region municipalities declared snow emergencies. The 20-mile stretch of U.S. Route 322 between Boalsburg in Centre County and Milroy in Mifflin County was closed in both directions as 4:30 p.m. PennDOT also reduced speed limits to 45 miles per hour on highways around the state, including Route 322, Interstate 99 and Interstate 80 in Centre County.

Centre County Schools to Have Delayed Starts on Friday

State College, Bellefonte, Bald Eagle and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts, Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy and Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology all announced two-hour delays for Friday. between 2 and 6 inches for the State College area, but from late morning Thursday into the afternoon heavy snow fell for an extended period of time and by early evening some parts of the Centre Region were reporting more than 8 inches on the ground already.

U.S. 322 between Boalsburg and Route 144 in Potters Mills was closed in both directions as of Thursday afternoon Speed limits have been lowered to 45 miles per hour on Interstate 99 in Centre County; Interstate 80 in Centre, Clearfield and Clinton counties; and U.S. Route 322 in Centre, Juniata, Mifflin and Clearfield counties.

Penn State Dismissing Classes Early for Impending Winter Storm

Penn State has canceled classes and activities for Thursday afternoon and evening at University Park as the first winter storm of the season moves closer to the region. Students will be dismissed at 11 a.m. and non-essential faculty and staff will be released at 11:30 a.m. Only employees previously identified as performing essential services should stay beyond the official release time, unless advised otherwise by their supervisor, according to a university news release.

Winter Storm Warning Issued with Snow and Ice on the Way

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Centre County from 8 a.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday as the area is expected to see its first snow accumulation of the season. According to the National Weather Service, heavy mixed precipitation is expected in Centre County, with general accumulations in the range of 4 to 6 inches.
