About: spokane valley, washington

Spokane Valley is located in eastern Washington, just east of Spokane. The area was originally inhabited by the Salish Indians. In the early 1780s fur traders made their way through the area of present day Spokane Valley, and began calling the Native Americans "Spokanes," meaning "Children of the Sun." The two groups lived peacefully together until a Native American chief, Chief Garry, protested the loss of land and joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The turmoil did not end well for the Spokanes, who were forced to leave their homes and move to a reservation northeast of the Spokane River.
