About: somerville, massachusetts

Somerville was originally settled as a part of Charlestown in 1630. Actually, it was known as "Charlestown beyond the Neck" because of its location towards the mainland of Massachusetts, not on the Charlestown Peninsula. As the area began to develop and expand, the area that is now Somerville remained predominately rural and Charlestown grew more and more urban. When Somerville was incorporated in 1842, it separated the rural town from the urbanizing Charlestown.
