The explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring that killed seven people was more than two years ago, yet a still-to-be-completed federal investigation has stalled residents' lawsuits and raised the ire of a Montgomery County judge. While the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives quickly determined the Aug. 10, 2016, explosion was caused by a gas leak in a utility room housing the complex's meters, the National Transportation Safety Board has not finished its probe of the pipelines at the apartments.

Malfunctioning microwave blamed for Silver Spring apartment fire

Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes during a fire in a Montgomery County apartment building late Friday, triggered by a malfunctioning microwave. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said a fire started around 10 p.m. in a three-story building on the 700 block of Northampton Drive, just off New Hampshire Avenue, in Silver Spring, Maryland.
