Arkansas elected officials get final approval for 3% rise in pay; move will cost state $1.2M a year

A panel of private citizens Tuesday formally approved 3 percent raises for state government elected officials over the objections of one official who doesn't want his pay increase. The pay bumps - for all seven constitutional officers, 193 judges, 28 prosecutors and 135 state legislators - will cost the state $1.2 million annually, according to the Arkansas auditor's office.

Police: Sherwood Walmart worker pepper-sprayed over 'poor customer service'

A teenager told investigators she pepper-sprayed an employee at a central Arkansas Walmart over "poor customer service," police said. Jenna Steele, 18, of Jacksonville was arrested shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday at the chain's Sherwood location, 9053 Arkansas 107, according to an arrest report from the city's Police Department.

North Little Rock City Council approves plan to restructure electric utility's rates

Explaining its vote as being strictly a business decision, the North Little Rock City Council approved Monday a restructuring of city Electric Department rates charged to the utility's customers. The restructuring isn't a flat increase, but it will increase the fixed rate that the city charges all of its utility customers while lowering the amount charged for the amount of power that customers use.

U.S. rankings list 94 schools in state

U.S. News & World Report analyzed schools based on factors related to graduation rates, percentages of Advanced Placement test-takers and student performance on state reading and math tests, including how the black, Hispanic and low-income students at a school did compared with statewide results for those subgroups. The eSTEM Public Charter High School in Little Rock was second in the state, followed by Lisa Academy North High charter school in Sherwood, Prairie Grove High School, and Bentonville High.

Staff cuts OK'd by Pulaski County school board

The School Board for the Pulaski County Special School District on Tuesday approved job cuts in the administration of its safety and security department as part of an overall plan to save $446,716 in support staff costs in the 2018-19 school year. The safety and security plan replaces the director and two coordinator jobs with two safety facilitators, reducing the salary and benefits cost of the department's administration from $324,012 a year to $182,297.
