Scranton is located in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania. Present-day Scranton and the surrounding area had been inhabited by the native Lenape tribe, from whose language "Lackawanna" (or "le-can-hanna", meaning "stream that forks") is derived. Gradually, settlers from New England came to the area in the late 1700s, establishing mills and other small businesses, and their village became known as Slocum Hollow.

Dunmore man who tried to flee crash in snowstorm is charged with DUI

A 39-year-old Dunmore man is charged with driving under the influence after hitting two parked cars Thursday, police said. Timothy S. Calpin, 2004 Rigg St., reportedly tried to leave the scene of the crash near Elm and Chestnut streets at 6:13 p.m. Bystanders kept Calpin from leaving.

Man accused of setting fire at Scranton business

Ernest Deininger, 49, 339 Orchard St., is charged with arson, criminal mischief and recklessly endangering another person after fire crews responded to Gress Refrigeration, 992 North South Road, about 2:40 p.m. for a fire. Someone had set fire to a pallet stacked 8 feet high with bovine blood plasma bags and plastic wrap, but employees extinguished the flames before crews arrived.

50 Years Ago - Scranton responsible for cindering near Viewmont Mall

In the statement, the highway department said the city of Scranton was actually responsible for cindering the portions of Routes 6 and 11 leading to Chinchilla and Route 6 near the Viewmont Mall. The statement continued by saying that under current state law, cities were responsible for the snow removal on state roadways within city limits.
