Redwood City School District moves forward with plan to shutter four schools

Parents from the east side of Redwood City on Wednesday night accused school district officials of targeting their community in its plan to close four elementary schools there at the end of this academic year to immediately save $4 million. The county Office of Education has given the district until Dec. 15 to come up with a three-year plan to save $10 million to make up for declining student enrollment.

Elections Office updates results

The latest round of tallies San Mateo County elections results were updated Tuesday, with additional shifts in close races and likely more changes with about 110,000 ballots left to count, according to the San Mateo County Elections Office. Still, two close races have some more clarity in that Rick Hunter appears to be solidifying his stake for the third open Redwood City Council seat, and Richa Awasthi is following suit for the second open seat on the Foster City Council.

Residential burglaries down by 50 percent

The holiday season usually brings with it droves of thieves looking for presents from Peninsula homes and cars, but this year residential burglaries are not as concerning as the number of vehicle burglaries, according to police. Both San Carlos and Redwood City police report few residential burglaries in recent weeks, but they remain vigilant about keeping out-of-town thieves out of cars.

Air district awaits analysis after Redwood City metal recycling facility fire

It will be at least a week before samples taken from a Redwood City metal recycling facility fire are analyzed by officials with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which has the authority to issue a public nuisance violation against the company should it determine that the fire contaminated regional air quality. BAAQMD spokesman Ralph Borrmann said Wednesday that the district took air samples from a monitoring station in Redwood City two miles from the scene of Sunday's fire at the Sims Metal Management at 699 Seaport Blvd. in the city's industrial sector.

Officials identify Redwood City schools to close

Four Redwood City schools will close and programs are to be merged as campuses are consolidated under a list of draft recommendations from Redwood City Elementary School District officials seeking to mend a fractured budget. The proposal to close John Gill, Adelante, Fair Oaks and Hawes elementary schools will go before officials and community members during a discussion Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Fox Theatre.

Townhomes planned for Redwood City

A proposal to tear down several vacant structures in Redwood City to make way for 10 for-sale townhouses is headed to the Planning Commission for a public hearing Tuesday, Nov. 13. The three-story townhouses would be located at 211 and 217 Vera Ave. and each one will encompass about 1,600 square feet. There are currently three one-story structures, an attached two-story structure and three detached garages spread across those parcels, but not for long if the proposal submitted by Dutchints Development is given the green light.

Holiday train coming to Peninsula

For the sixth year in a row, a special set of Caltrain cars will be transformed into the Caltrain Holiday Train at the Port of Redwood City. The two historic rail cars to be used, the Virginia City and the Yosemite Falls, were once used as private cars for the rich and famous and have been donated to encompass the Caltrain Holiday Train, according to Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew.
