Ride of Silence, police crackdown bring awareness to bike safety issues

Emma Gobble, 9, looked both tired and happy as she held a pink portable fan to her face, leaning against the back fender of a Jeep as her dad, Paul Gobble, packed the their bikes into the back. They had just biked 8 1/2 miles together through Portage and Kalamazoo, together with a few dozen others participating in the Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 16. Part of Kalamazoo Bike Week, ride participants go on a slow, safe and silent ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed in traffic crashes.

Lightning appears to be the culprit of a fire south of Kalamazoo

Lightning appears to be the culprit of an early Sunday morning attic fire reported on Tradewind Drive, according to the Portage Public Safety Department. No one was injured, but the blaze did cause extensive damage to the roof and attic of the home at 5698 Tradewind Drive, said Battalion Chief Charles Wellman with Portage fire.

Freak accident causes blackout in Portage Tuesday, May 8

PORTAGE -- Milham has reopened but work continues and about three dozen homes and businesses have lost power after a semi snagged a low hanging wire and pulled down three power poles along Milham near Utah Avenue. Falling poles caused damage to a parked car and a building near Oregon Avenue, but no one was hurt by the incident, which occurred at about 3:30.
