Thanksgiving is upon us next Thursday. This is not a Thanksgiving story. This is a story about America's amnesia and collective ability to throw history away.

Thanksgiving filled with traditions

Thanksgiving is one of Americans' favorite holidays but that doesn't mean it hasn't survived sporadic attacks over the nearly 400 years since the famous three-day feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The rites and rituals of our national Thanksgiving have evolved over those four centuries and that process surely will continue, writes Melanie Kirkpatrick, author of "Thanksgiving: The Holiday at the Heart of the American Experience."

No drama for some SouthCoast candidates on Election Day

While Election Day can be a nail-biter for many candidates, for some in these parts it was a walk in the park. A baker's dozen of office-holders - all except one of them incumbents - had no opponents in Tuesday's election.

Reliving 'the good old days'

DARTMOUTH - Carlton "Cukie" Macomber, the 93-year-old descendant of one of Westport's earliest farm families, made the familiar trip from his hometown to Russells Mills Village Oct. 28 to talk to members and guests of the Dartmouth Historical & Arts Society about his recollections of farm life in the 1930s and 1940s. He seemed at ease in the Russells Mills Schoolhouse, a place he has lectured before about "the good old days" of fishing, farming and other aspects of rural life in Westport, a place where the Macomber name has been a staple since the 1700s.
