Harbormaster post stays on hold in City Council

The city will remain without a harbormaster, at least for now, after an item to appoint Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro to fill the vacancy stalled in the City Council Chambers on Tuesday despite having more than enough support to pass. Nine councilors told The Standard-Times they were prepared to approve the motion by Mayor Jon Mitchell to appoint Cordeiro as harbormaster; however Councilor-at-Large Brian Gomes motioned to charter rule the item, delaying any more discussion until the next meeting on Dec. 13.
