Naugatuck is a consolidated borough and town located in western Connecticut. Just south of the town of Waterbury, Naugatuck straddles the Naugatuck River, which it was named for. The area was settled in 1701 and quickly grew into a farming community. During the Industrial Revolution the town transformed into a "mill town," much like many other towns found in the Naugatuck Valley. The town mostly manufactured rubber and in 1892 nine rubber manufacturing companies combined to become the United States Rubber Company. The company was headquartered in Naugatuck until the 1980s.

St. Michael's Episcopal Church is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Supper on Nov. 22 and seeking donations to help support the holiday meal. The sit-down supper runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church, 210 Church St.,, and is free to all residents in the Naugatuck area.

Logan remains winner after recount

A recount in the race for the 17th Senatorial District confirmed Republican state Sen. George Logan won by a slim margin, bringing an end to a seesaw battle for the Senate seat that saw its share of twists and turns. According to unofficial figures provided by the registrar of voters offices in each town in the district, which covers all or parts of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge, Logan defeated Democratic challenger Jorge Cabrera by 83 votes, 18,532-18,449, to earn a second term in office.

The 67-year-old retired Naugatuck Police officer was a passenger in a pickup truck driving down a hill on Route 68 with his wife by his side when two vehicles crashed ahead of them, sending a Jeep careening into the front of their Chevy.

Ceremonies to mark Veterans Day

The day is highlighted by the Veterans Day parade at 2 p.m. The parade steps off from the Ion Bank parking lot at 87 Church St. and proceeds to the Green, where a ceremony will take place. Naugatuck police officer Matthew DaSilva, a U.S. Army veteran, is the parade marshal and keynote speaker for the ceremony.

Borough man dedicates his time to help fellow vets

For his service, Froelick, a 73-year-old Naugatuck native, will be inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame during a ceremony Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. at the Legislative Office Building atrium in Hartford. After graduating from Naugatuck High School in 1964, Froelick joined the U.S. Air Force and became a parachute rigger, a position that required him to pack parachutes for the pilots and crew, pack the ejection seats, and pack the drag chutes that are used to slow an aircraft down when it lands.

The Naugatuck Veterans Council is inviting Naugatuck churches to participate in a nationwide "ringing of the bells" ceremony on Veterans Day. The ceremony, which takes place at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, signifies the exact time of the armistice that ended World War I. After five decades in Naugatuck, Lindgren closed his office - Earl R.
