Good Samaritan trying to stop assault gets punched, nearly carjacked

Police are looking for a man who punched a good Samaritan trying to stop an assault and then tried to carjack the other person's vehicle. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers said a person driving in the area of Emerald Drive and Miller Road about 3:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16 saw a man assaulting a female.

Kalamazoo prosecutor says he will dismiss hundreds of marijuana cases

Pending criminal cases based solely on marijuana offenses that would be legal under Michigan's recently-approved Proposal 1 will be dismissed, Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said. The new law, which Michigan voters approved on Nov. 6, will allow people 21 and older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana, or 10 ounces in a secure location at their home, and to grow 12 plants or less for themselves at home.

Slippery roads cause crashes around Kalamazoo County

On a mile-long stretch of West Main Street from Nichols Road to Fletcher Avenue, police were working four crashes around 11 a.m., Kalamazoo Township Police Officer Jeff Jerzyk said. In one of those crashes, at West Main and Nichols Road, a driver was traveling east on West Main Street and tried to turn south onto Solon Street, Jerzyk said.

PlazaCorp Realty Advisors Inc. plans to invest $42.8 million to redevelop the Rose Street Market building and an adjacent parking lot into two buildings totaling 153,500 square feet. The buildings would include a 118-room boutique hotel and 107-room extended stay Home2 Suites by Hilton, with an indoor pool, office space and an elevated walkway across Eleanor Street.

Office Depot is holding a grand opening for a new location in Portage today, replacing a Kalamazoo location that closed recently. The new location opened Oct. 10 at 6272 South Westnedge and will hold a grand opening event Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The store will offer 20 percent off certain items during the event and give shoppers a chance to win prizes, according to a news release from the business.
