Hamden's nickname is "The Land of the Sleeping Giant," after a hill formation in the rural northern section of town. It was settled by Puritans after being purchased from the Quinnipiack Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area. When the town was incorporated, in 1786, residents named it after the English statesman John Hampden. During the late nineteenth century, Italian and Irish immigrants poured into Hampden. Today, there is a large Italian-American population. Notable residents include The Rock (Dwayne Douglas Johnson) and Eli Whitney (inventor of the cotton gin).

Logan remains winner after recount

A recount in the race for the 17th Senatorial District confirmed Republican state Sen. George Logan won by a slim margin, bringing an end to a seesaw battle for the Senate seat that saw its share of twists and turns. According to unofficial figures provided by the registrar of voters offices in each town in the district, which covers all or parts of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge, Logan defeated Democratic challenger Jorge Cabrera by 83 votes, 18,532-18,449, to earn a second term in office.

Branford police have located a pick-up truck that was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident last week. The Branford Police Department says that they are working with the South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit in investigating a hit-and-run accident that happened on Sunday, November 4th at around 8:20 a.m. A 52-year-old Branford woman who was riding her bicycle was struck by a white Ford F-series pick-up truck at the intersection of East Main Street and Featherbed Lane.
