Franklin is located about twenty miles south of downtown Nashville, Tennessee in Williamson County. Founded in 1799 by Abraham Maury, Jr., the city was named after Benjamin Franklin. Franklin was a close friend of Dr. Hugh Williamson, for whom Williamson County was named. For 180 years of Franklin's existence, the town was one of the wealthiest towns in Tennessee. However, after the Civil War the entire area was devastated and it was not until 120 years later that it regained its economic level.
