The city, sometimes called "the Soybean Capital of the World, " was founded in 1823 and is located along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur in Central Illinois. Decatur was the first home in Illinois of Abraham Lincoln, who settled just west of Decatur with his family in 1830. May 22 - Simply locking doors can be crucial to preventing crime, and a slogan created by a new collaborative effort aims to drive that message home. The Decatur Police Department, Macon County Sheriff's Office, Children's Museum of Illinois and Limitless Decatur & Macon County have combined forces on the "Look, Stop & Lock" campaign to remind residents to protect their property.

Fight the Bite of Mosquitoes with the Three "R's"

May 22 - The Macon County Health Department along with the Macon Mosquito Abatement District is reminding Decatur and Macon county residents how to reduce mosquito bites as well as reducing the number of mosquitoes this summer. The agencies say mosquitoes can pose a serious health hazard to everyone, including your pets, with West Nile virus being the most common mosquito-borne illness.

May 21 - A section of Decatur is among more than 300 economic opportunity zones in Illinois approved by the U.S. Treasury Department, Governor Bruce Rauner announced recently. "This is a really exciting opportunity for communities throughout Illinois," Rauner said in a news release.

May 19 - Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded more than $1.2 million in "Back to Books" grants to 340 public libraries and school districts statewide, including the Decatur Public School District and other area libraries and school districts. The grants help schools and libraries acquire fiction and/or nonfiction books to improve library collections and engage readers in formal and independent reading.

May 17 - Central Illinois Communities will receive over $11 million in federal grant funding through programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and urban Development . The City of Decatur will receive funding through the Community Development Block Grant and the HOME Investment Partnerships program.

Keirsean Bond Found Guilty in Effingham Man's Death

May 17 - After a four day trial, a jury has found Keirsean Bond of Decatur guilty of the 2017 shooting death of an Effingham man. Bond was convicted in the murder of Todd Daniel Feldkamp and wounding Scottie Bone, both of Effingham.

Police: Trio and minor stole from cars, house

After midnight on Wednesday, officers say they responded to a burglary in the 2800 black of East Wood St. in Decatur. The homeowner showed police surveillance video, which officers say shows 26-year-old Darlene Carter, 28-year-old David Bond and 19-year-old Arturo Santamaria working to steal from the house and a car.

Police: Man who ran from police had 2,596 grams of cocaine in vehicle

Decatur Police Department officials say the man who ran from police on Wednesday during a traffic stop on Interstate 72 near Argenta had a large amount of cocaine. On Wednesday, just before 2 p.m. Decatur police and the Macon County Sheriff's Office Interdiction Team, stopped a vehicle on I-72 westbound near the 152 mile marker.
