The city, sometimes called "the Soybean Capital of the World, " was founded in 1823 and is located along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur in Central Illinois. Decatur was the first home in Illinois of Abraham Lincoln, who settled just west of Decatur with his family in 1830. Lincoln gave his first political speech in Decatur about the importance of Sangamon River navigation that caught the attention of Illinois political leaders.

Prize-winning children's author Richard Peck dies at 84 Source: AP

Prize-winning children's author Richard Peck, who drew upon his Illinois roots for such favorites as "A Long Way from Chicago" and "A Year Down Yonder," has died. Peck died on Wednesday at his home in New York City at age 84. His publisher, Penguin Young Readers, told The Associated Press, that he died after a battle with cancer.

Decatur Police Investigate Thursday Morning Stabbing

May 24 - At approximately 12:41 a.m. Thursday morning, Decatur Police responded to a home in the 1000 block of West Decatur Street in reference to two people having been stabbed. Upon arriving, officers located two Decatur residents, a 61-year-old male, and a 62-year-old male, were found with injuries.

Lakeside Triathlon Takes a Year Off

May 22 - The Decatur Lakeside Triathlon will be taking a hiatus in 2018, as organizers look at a different date, and a different course for 2019. Originally known as the Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon, the race was created to honor the memory of Rodney T. Miller, a 40-year-old Illinois State Police sergeant from Decatur who was killed in the line of duty in a 2006 traffic accident.
