SAN FRANCISCO The family of Chinedu Valentine Okobi, the 36-year-old father and Morehouse College graduate who died after being tackled by sheriff's deputies and repeatedly tased near San Francisco, is calling for an independent investigation after viewing video footage of the fatal encounter. The 34-minute-long video contradicts public statements made by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office after Chinedu's death, according to his family, and they want the footage shown to the public.

Christmas Fair Happening Through Dec. 23 At Cow Palace

Bay Area residents looking for indoor pastimes can cruise by the Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in Daly City, which will run for six weekends through Dec. 23. The exhibition halls at the Cow Palace have been transformed into the winding lanes of Victorian London, with shops, music halls, theaters, pubs and dance parties, organizers said. Ceramics, glass, clothing, jewelry and toys and other wares are on sale at the event.

Man speeds away from police, crashes, arrested for pot in car

A Daly City man is in jail for felony evading and possession of marijuana for sale after crashing his car in his attempt to speed away from a San Bruno police officer trying to pull him over near the intersection of First Avenue and Pine Street Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 3:15 p.m., a San Bruno police officer attempted to stop the car, which fled at a high rate of speed and collided with two parked cars before coming to a stop approximately one block from where the initial enforcement stop was attempted.

Jury convicts man of killing Daly City teen in 12-year-old murder

A former Daly City man accused of helping a childhood friend and former lover murder a teen acquaintance in 2001 before both men went on the lam is guilty of first-degree murder and using a knife in the fatal stabbing, according to jurors who deliberated three days before returning their verdict. The decision means Reynaldo Maldonado, 34, will spend 25 years to life in prison for the May 21, 2001, death of Quetzlcoatl Alba in a storage unit turned teen hangout at the Westlake Apartments.

A 66-year-old house cleaner who allegedly torched an SUV in the parking lot of the Daly City Department of Motor Vehicles because he was angry about not reclaiming his towed vehicle may once again be unfit for trial, according to his defense attorney. Hugo Carranza already spent several months at Napa State Hospital after doctors previously found him incompetent but he returned to San Mateo County in August after staff there felt he was finally able to aid in his own defense.

Fire engulfs multiple cars in Peninsula parking lot blaze

A news release from the North County Fire Authority, which serves Brisbane, Daly City and Pacifica, said that five fire engines responded at 5:21 a.m. Saturday to reports of a multiple vehicle fire at Alana Way at Beatty Road. Eight vehicles in a vehicle storage lot were on fire when crews arrived, according to authorities, and firefighters had to shuttle water to the "remote" lot to put out the fire.

DA says no charges for officers in Taser death

More than 10 weeks after a 55-year-old Redwood City man with history of mental illness died following a struggle with four Redwood City police officers involving the discharging of a Taser, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office determined the filing of criminal charges against the officers is not warranted. In a letter sent to Redwood City Police Chief Dan Mulholland Thursday, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe concluded use of force by Officers Matthew Cydzik, Daniel Di Bona, Oscar Poveda and Brian Simmons and contributing to the death of Ramzi Saad Aug. 13 did not involve a violation of any California criminal statutes.
