$100K bonus approved for University of Illinois president

The University of Illinois board has approved a $100,000 bonus to system President Tim Killeen for the third straight year. Board of Trustees members voted during Thursday's meeting in Chicago to award the performance bonus to Killeen.

State trooper gets probation, agrees to resign over sex solicitation

Illinois State Trooper Leonard Kirkpatrick appears in court during his arraignment on charges of official misconduct Friday, July 6, 2018, at the Champaign County Courthouse in Urbana. On Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, Kirkpatrick was sentenced to a form of probation and agreed to resign from his job after pleading guilty to misdemeanor solicitation of a sex act, admitting that on April 1, he made contact via text message with a person he believed to be a prostitute, offering to pay her for sex.

URBANA, Ill. A state trooper who contacted someone he believed to be a prostitute and wanted to pay her for sex will serve probation.

Winter weather advisory

The National Weather Service says all of East Central Illinois will be under winter weather advisory starting Wednesday night, except for Ford and Iroquois counties. The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 6 p.m. Thursday and covers Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion counties.

County board forgives $500,000 in loans to nursing home

The Champaign County Nursing Home continues to shower county government with red ink even in its final weeks before being sold. At Tuesday night's committee-of-the-whole meeting, the Champaign County Board unanimously recommended forgiving two loans to the home totaling $500,000.

About 130 schools and university systems have signed onto a program directed by the Association for Public and Land-grant Universities in Washington, D.C., officials announced this week. Dubbed "Powered by Publics: Scaling Student Success," the initiative groups together school leaders to brainstorm ways to improve access to higher education, eliminate achievement gaps among students and boost the number of students earning postsecondary degrees.

Tolono man's sex case resolved with plea

A Tolono man sentenced last week to 45 years in federal prison for sexually exploiting three girls has pleaded guilty to molesting a fourth girl in a state court criminal case. Joshua E. Lange, 40, was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday before Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd to a single count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Champaign school board rejects resolutions on arming teachers

The Unit 4 school board formalized its stance against armed teachers in its schools Monday night when it rejected multiple resolutions recommended for adoption by the Illinois Association of School Boards. Although some smaller, more rural districts like DeLand-Weldon and Bement - both of which co-sponsored one of those resolutions - have argued that the choice to arm teachers should be made at a local level, Champaign board members felt either that such resolutions were inappropriate for a district staffed with school-resource officers and proximity to local police or that the idea itself needed more fleshing out.

The Illinois Lottery says a ticket worth $350,000 was sold at Circle K in Champaign, which is located at 601 N. Neil St. Officials say it matched the five numbers to win the jackpot amount. "The Illinois Lottery urges the lucky winner to sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe place until they visit one of the Lottery's five Prize Centers in Chicago, Des Plaines, Rockford, Springfield or Fairview Heights," Illinois Lottery leaders said in a press release.

In 1968, the Piatt County Board and the Monticello City Council both called for public hearings on the proposed Oakley Dam project, which threatened Allerton Park.

Urbana property tax levy breaks on Carle question

It's Urbana's turn to dig into property tax levies for the year, and questions abound of whether Carle Foundation Hospital properties will be included. The estimated levy of $9.09 million is a 120 percent increase from last year and will be collected through one of two likely tax rates: $1.3152 per $100 of Urbana's total Equalized Assessed Valuation if the hospital properties are included, or $1.3550 if they're not.
