Baltimore County is considering moves to increase fines for red light camera tickets from $75 to $100, expand locations where speed cameras can be placed and extend the county's overall traffic camera enforcement program for more than a decade. Baltimore County Executive Don Mohler, whose term in office ends in early December, is proposing a contract with a new red light and speed camera vendor that could be worth up to $21 million over the life of the deal.

State appeals court rules judge erred in holding Maryland health department officials in contempt

The Maryland Court of Special Appeals has ruled a Baltimore judge exceeded her authority when she held five state Health Department officials in civil contempt over delays in providing psychiatric hospital beds to defendants referred by the courts. Unless the decision is overturned by the state Court of Appeals, it would set a precedent limiting the power of judges to use civil contempt to address ongoing problems in complying with court orders.
