In 1924, Carmel installed one of the first automatic traffic signals in the United States at the intersection of Main Street and Range Line Road. It was the invention of Leslie Haines. Today, it is house in the old train station on the Monon. Attractions in Carmel include Carmel Monon Center which has a new water park and mega fitness center, a flowing well in Flowing Well Park that contains a natural artesian well which provides high quality drinking water, and a multiuse trail called the Monon Trail which is part of the Rails-to-Trails movement.
