Regional economic initiative to roll out in 2019

A comprehensive economic development initiative encompassing Bennington and Windham counties is moving toward a launch next spring, officials said during a public input session here Thursday. Rachel Selsky, of Camoin Associates, consultants preparing a detailed strategy document for the region, said a draft five-year plan with an overview and narrative will be prepared by Jan. 7, 2019, after which a 30-day public commit period will commence.

Butler, who is in the process of writing a biography of the Colgate family, will speak on the immigration of Colgate's parents, his marriage to Hope Conkling and the choices their four daughters made in their lives, and most of all their impact on Bennington. James Colby Colgate was the grandson of William Colgate, the founder of the toothpaste company and the person for whom Colgate University is named.

School board turns down solar proposal

The Bennington School District board has chosen not to pursue a net metering proposal for a solar array in Pownal, amid concern that the project might not be the best deal for the district. "There are so many moving pieces," Chris Murphy, chairman of the board, said at its meeting Wednesday night in explaining the board's decision not to move forward with the project, which came after an approximately 45-minute executive session.
