More road maintenance begins immediately, big goals await bond vote

Improvements to West Virginia roads could begin at the start of July, even as the state prepares for a multi-billion-dollar bond vote, the state Transportation Secretary said today. Road improvement bills passed by the state Legislature last week will provide a boost of additional revenue starting July 1, state Transportation Secretary Tom Smith said on MetroNews' "Talkline."

West Virginia Day activities planned statewide

The state Division of Culture and History will commemorate West Virginia Day with several festivities planned across the state on Tuesday. Activities will take place at the state Culture Center in Charleston, Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville, Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park in Logan and West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling.

Fort Henry Club Seeing Some Major Upgrades

After spending years of work and more than $2 million on the Fort Henry Club building, officials with McKinley and Associates hope the historic structure at the corner of 14th and Chapline streets can serve as a bridge from Wheeling's past to its future. A $15,000 grant from the city's new Facade Improvement Program will help fund renovations on the front porch area of the building, according to McKinley and Associates President Ernest Dellatorre.

End Delay in Tests Involving Death

It has been more than a year since the body of 15-year-old Kyle Morgan, of Moundsville, was found under the Fort Henry Bridge in Wheeling. His family wants answers concerning how he died.

West Virginia Independence Hall Museum will have a West Virginia Day celebration starting at noon Tuesday with a reading by Ed Phillips of the proclamation for statehood, followed by birthday cake and punch. There will be a large birthday card for people to sign, and they can get pictures posing as a Union or Confederate soldier complete with life-size cardboard cutouts and props.

Members Of German Press Visit Wheeling

Seven German journalists visited Wheeling on Saturday afternoon as part of a 10-day national tour to learn more about the United States' media industry. They met with local media professionals to talk shop, as well as discuss topics revelant to both countries such as shifting energy markets and politics.

Historic Warwood Structures Explored

In her year of researching the Warwood neighborhood of Wheeling, Christina Rieth has documented 1,381 historic structures built before 1969. Rieth, who studied architecture and is a PreserveWV AmeriCorps member working for Wheeling Heritage highlighted 23 historic properties in Warwood, all of which will be part of the actual walking tour she will conduct starting at noon Saturday at the Warwood Shopping Center.

One year ago Friday, Kyle Morgan, a 15-year-old John Marshall High School student, was found dead beneath the Fort Henry Bridge in Wheeling. According to the Wheeling Police Department, investigators are still waiting for DNA testing results from the state medical examiner's office and no arrests have been made regarding the case in Ohio County.
