2 arrested, 2 still at large in theft of 800-pound statue

Two people were in custody and two others still at large Wednesday as Salt Lake police continued their investigation into a stolen 800-pound statue of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young sitting on a park bench. The bronze statue, worth an estimated $125,000, was recovered Tuesday evening in West Jordan.

At a public hearing Wednesday about a proposal to sell Utah Transit Authority property at the Clearfield FrontRunner station for a train assembly plant, concerns about a former board member's involvement in the project never came up. Last month, UTA trustees put the deal on hold after questions were raised about the impact of a company owned by Sheldon Killpack, a trustee in 2015, building the plant on the agency's nonprosecution agreement with federal prosecutors.

A year ago, city crews replaced 5,000 traditional streetlights with light-emitting diode lights, or LEDs, with the goal of providing better lighting at a reduced operating cost - and shrinking the city's carbon footprint. The city worked with Rocky Mountain Power on the project and as a result has qualified for $240,298 in energy saving incentives.
