A wilderness ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, two former state legislators, several public educators and small-business owners were among 31 West Jordan residents who submitted their names for consideration to fill a vacant City Council seat. Councilman Jeff Haaga - who caused a stir last year for a hit-and-run misdemeanor after drinking at a local tavern - resigned from his at-large seat last month because of "personal family matters."

Woman sent to prison for involvement in kidnapping men, forcing one to shoot another

A West Valley woman was sentenced to prison Tuesday for her part in a plot to kidnap two men over a drug debt, which ended in one of the men being forced to shoot the other. Tina Maxine Soules, 44, was given no credit for time served as she was ordered to spend at least two and up to 20 years in prison for manslaughter, a second-degree felony, in the death of Cleon Knight, 34. A sentence of one to 15 years will run concurrently for kidnapping, a second-degree felony.

Nominees announced for 3rd District Juvenile Court vacancies

The vacancies result from the retirements of Judge Charles Behrens Jr., effective July 1, and Judge C. Dane Nolan, effective July 15. The 3rd Judicial District includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties. A Draper man arrested over the weekend and accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing a 4-year-old girl has been investigated in two other cases involving young children, police say.
