Vineland is located in southern New Jersey. Charles K. Landis, the city's founder, discovered that the soil was well-suited for growing grapes and began advertising to Italian grape growers in order to attract them to Vineland. When Thomas Bramwell Welch discovered a pasteurization process that prevents the fermentation of grapes, he founded Welch's Grape Juice in Vineland and purchased locally-grown grapes to make his "unfermented wine" or grape juice.
