Officials on different tracks for South Coast Rail route

Elected officials took turns Thursday ripping plans for a Middleboro route, then supporting the route as part of the SouthCoast Rail Notice of Project Change Forum at UMass Law at Dartmouth. The meeting began with officials coming out against the "Phase 1" plan proposed by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation including Sen. Marc Pacheco and Mayor Jon Mitchell.

South Coast Rail meeting is Thursday

MassDOT filed a change notice on March 15, saying it would adopt a phased approach to South Coast Rail, making the previously preferred Stoughton route Phase 2. Phase 1 would provide service to New Bedford, Fall River and Taunton via Middleboro, sooner than would be possible with the Stoughton route. Critics say the Middleboro route requires a longer ride, does not stop in downtown Taunton, and does not use electric trains.

Man faces serious injuries after motorcycle crash in Taunton

TAUNTON, M.A. One man suffered serious injuries after two cars hit him while he was riding a motorcycle Tuesday afternoon, authorities say. Massachusetts State Police told ABC6 News a 23-year-old man from Goffstown N.H., was riding his 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle on Route 24 South, when a car changed lanes and hit his bike.

Rain brings relief to parched region

Thanks to the recent downpours, said Joe Dellicarpini, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton, the region is in a good place right now with regard to the water level.  "Certainly the wet weather has helped us over the past month, really," Mr. Dellicarpini said. Flooding causes evacuation advisory in Middleborough neighborhood

Residents of a Middleborough neighborhood were advised to evacuate their homes Tuesday after the Taunton River overflowed, flooding roadways with as much as 2.5 feet of water, town fire officials said. Fire Chief Lance Benjamino said he advised residents of nine homes on Woloski Park, a street where flooding is common, to leave for their safety.

Massachusetts had the highest rate of opioid-related visits to hospital emergency departments among 30 states included in the latest federal report, another grim benchmark of the drug scourge gripping the region.
