A suburb of Charleston, Summerville was settled after the Revolutionary War and was named Pineland Village in 1785. Summerville became a town in 1847 and was named a top spot for the recovery of lung and throat disorders in 1899 by the Congress of Physicians, due in part to the presence of so many trees that released turpentine derivatives into that area. The area today plays host to the Flowertown Festival. Held each spring it is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina.

Summerville authorities didn't realize a man had been shot earlier this week until medical scans revealed a small bullet lodged in his brain. David Williams, 50, died Wednesday night after being shot in an eye earlier that day at his home, police said.

Joseph Wheeler McGowan, 51, is charged with 16 counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to a press release from the office of South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson. McGowan was arrested Monday.

The new Interstate 26 interchange connecting Nexton Parkway in Berkeley County to Summerville may be named for one of the first black troopers in the state. Tillman Millhouse Jr. was born in Summerville in 1941, and in 1968 he became one of the first black troopers in South Carolina, and the first black trooper in lower South Carolina.

Lt. Nick Santana, spokesman for the Summerville Police Department, says officers responded to an address on West 2nd North Street just before 1 a.m. Wednesday to find a man suffering a gunshot wound in his home. "He is being treated at a local hospital and his condition is considered critical," Santana said.

The earthquake is believed to have struck at about 11:14 a.m. At the end of May, a minor earthquake with its epicenter in the area of Benton Lodge and Midland Parkway in Summerville, was recorded in parts of the tri-county area. That earthquake registered as a 0.5 on the Richter Scale, according to USGS, and was also recorded near Lincolnville and Ladson.

The body of a Summerville man was discovered in the early morning hours Sunday lying in a roadway, authorities said. Jeremy Allen Powell, 24, was found at about 2:24 a.m. in the area of Central Avenue at Embassy Drive near Summerville, according to the Dorchester County coroner's office.
