Federal investigators said they found a disconnected vent pipe in the basement room where natural gas built up before a lethal explosion last year at a Silver Spring apartment complex. When and why the pipe was disconnected have not been determined, but the disconnect would have bypassed a safety feature meant to vent gas from the basement room of the building to the exterior, investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wrote in a preliminary report on the Aug. 10, 2016 explosion that killed seven people and left more than 100 homeless.

High school chemistry lessons coming to Rock Creek Park

The Montgomery County Board of Education is being sued for millions of dollars in connection with a teacher who was convicted of child sex abuse. In announcing the suit, Jeff Herman, a Florida lawyer who specializes in sexual abuse cases involving children, said Thursday "the school system here has failed miserably at protecting its students" from John Vigna, a former teacher at Cloverly Elementary School, in Silver Spring, Maryland, who was convicted of nine counts of sexual abuse in June and was sentenced to 48 years in prison last week.
