LISA Academy gets OK to expand in Sherwood

The LISA Academy charter school system received final state approval Thursday on its plan to build a secondary school campus in Sherwood and increase its enrollment cap for all of its campuses by 600 to a total of 2,700. The Arkansas Board of Education voted unanimously with no questions or discussion to uphold last month's decision of the state's Charter Authorizing Panel to approve the expansion amendments to the LISA Academy system's state-issued charter.

JPs approve regional pact for LR-based mental-crisis unit

Eleven central Arkansas counties and cities agreed to help fund a regional crisis-stabilization unit for mentally ill people through a Pulaski County Quorum Court action Tuesday evening. The agreement, approved unanimously by Quorum Court members, is among Pulaski, Grant, Perry, Saline, Jefferson and Lonoke counties and the cities of Little Rock, North Little Rock, Sherwood, Jacksonville and Maumelle.

NLR electric utility's Springer gets top job

Scott Springer will take over management of the North Little Rock Electric Department in May after four years as the city-owned utility's assistant general manager, Mayor Joe Smith announced at Monday night's City Council meeting. Springer, 58, will replace General Manager James Bray, who enters retirement May 29. Springer will begin his new position at that time.

Push afoot to get word out on better recycling

Advertisements, a website and -- if a person does wrong -- a reminder note of what can and cannot be recycled are coming soon to most Pulaski County recyclers. The Regional Recycling and Waste Reduction District in Pulaski County is launching a recycling education program called "Do Recycling Right" to better educate most of the county's residents on what should and shouldn't be in their curbside carts or apartment complex recycling bins.

Sherwood lawyers argue woman's suit merits ax

A Sherwood woman's federal lawsuit seeking monetary damages against the city of Sherwood for alleged violations of her constitutional rights during her prosecution on hot-check charges should be thrown out of court, attorneys for the city argued Tuesday. In a motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Tamatrice Williams, Arkansas Municipal League attorneys John Wilkerson and Michael Mosley said the woman's claims are barred by the statute of limitations; involve acts allegedly committed by a state judge, which cannot bind the city; could have been raised in defense of her prosecution; and cannot be pursued against the city because it is entitled to sovereign immunity.

Little Rock man gets 7 years for groping girl

In exchange for a seven-year sentence, a 34-year-old Little Rock man admitted Thursday in Pulaski County Circuit Court to molesting a 13-year-old girl. The admission comes just two months after a jury rejected a 19-year-old woman's accusations that Ambrose Bernard Williams had raped her when she was a child.
