Shelton was home to one of the largest arson fires in U.S. history. In 1975, the Sponge Rubber Products plant (formerly owned by B.F. Goodrich) was set on fire. Charles Moeller, president of the parent company, was acquitted on arson charges, but in a civil lawsuit, a jury in 1988 ruled the insurer did not have to pay claims on the fire. Shotgun seller charged with drug possession

A Shelton man was arrested on drug charges after police received complaints he was trying to sell a shotgun outside a discount store. Rudolph Frolish, 37, of Wakelee Avenue, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and failure to keep drugs in a container.

Wrong Way Driver On Merritt Parkway Causes Three-Car Crash

A 59-year-old woman driving the wrong way on the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield caused a three-car crash, sending three people to the hospital, according to Connecticut State Troopers. Ashley W. Cooper, of Bridgeport, was driving southbound in the left lane of the northbound side of the parkway in a Nissan Altima around 10:55 p.m. Tuesday when she ran head-on into a GMC Acadia, driven by Jeffrey Butler, 51, of Shelton, said Trooper Kelly Grant.

Margaret Dowdy, 67, of Westport, Conn., has been reported missing, though police did not say when she was reported missing. Dowdy was last seen in the area of Pine Rock Park in Shelton on the morning of Feb. 9, 2018, police said.

A Shelton man, caught in part thanks to tips from the public, was arrested and charged Feb. 2 with stealing a gun from a locked locker at a Fairfield gym last August. Tyler Johnson, 28, of Long Hill Avenue, was charged with third-degree burglary, possession of burglar tools, third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree larceny, stealing a firearm, and criminal possession of a pistol or revolver.
