Basement fire does $25,000 damage in Portage

The Portage Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the 10600 block of Oakland Drive for a possible structure fire at 3:05 a.m. Saturday. The first arriving unti reported a single-story residential building with smoke showing from the structure.

Michigan house opts to give cyclists 3-feet

Cyclists may have to learn to live with a three foot buffer between them and motorists. Portage Republican Margaret O'Brien was able to convince the State Senate to adopt the same five foot passing rule that is already in place in Kalamazoo and Portage, which was approved locally after Kalamazoo's bike tragedy, giving cyclists more room on the roadway.

Police seeking Portage armed robbery suspect

Police said the 65-year-old victim reported working at a nearby business when he was confronted in the parking lot by a male wearing a mask who appeared to have a gun. During the robbery, the victim was hit in the head before the suspect left on foot.

Look for cosmetics and beauty products seller Ulta Beauty to open a new store in mid-April at 5220 W. Main St. The restaurant, just west of Kalamazoo, was closed in mid-July by Ovation Brands Inc., which did not provide prior notice of the closing or an explanation for it. Ulta Beauty Inc. markets itself as the premier beauty destination for cosmetics, fragrance, skin, hair care products and salon services.

Kalamazoo officer pleads to reduced charge in drunken driving case

A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety who was charged with drunken driving pleaded guilty Monday to a reduced charge and was fined. Jeffery Crouse, 45, of Portage, pleaded guilty Monday, Feb. 26, in Kalamazoo County District Court to a misdemeanor charge of being drunk and disorderly.
