A family in Kalamazoo County is counting their blessings after a fire on New Year's Day destroyed their home. The eight people inside were all able to escape through a window.

The fire was reported at 11:36 a.m. at the home along Yarmouth Avenue. The Portage Department of Public Safety says a teenager alerted his family to a fire in the living room and they were able to escape through a bedroom window with the help of a neighbor.

Driver critically hurt, found after fleeing Kalamazoo County accident

A canine unit located a driver who had been critically injured in a crash that he fled from early Saturday morning. At 6:58 a.m. Saturday, members of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a personal injury accident at the intersection of East MN Avenue and South 44th Street in Charleston Township.

Driver critically injured in US-131 crash in Portage

Investigators are trying to determine what led to a one-vehicle crash on US-131 that critically injured a man. Police have identified the driver as a 38-year-old Schoolcraft resident, who had to be cut out of his vehicle and taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital with critical injuries and is listed in serious condition.

Portage Police and Fire crews responded to the one-vehicle crash at about 11:00 a.m. on the northbound side of U.S. 131 near the 29 mile marker. A 38-year-old man from Schoolcraft had left the roadway in a 2011 Ford Focus and hit a tree in the median.
