Investigators with the Portage Department of Public Safety believe a driver involved in two separate crashes Thursday evening was under the influence of drugs. The first crash was reported at 6:57 p.m. at the intersection of Lovers Lane and E. Kalamazoo man convicted for selling heroin that killed Portage resident

A Kalamazoo man has been convicted of five federal crimes including selling heroin that resulted in the death of a Portage man. Steven Whyte, 29, was convicted Wednesday in Grand Rapids federal court for Distribution of Heroin Resulting in Death, Possession of a Firearm in Drug Trafficking and Conspiring to Distribute Heroin, amongst other charges.

Portage principals resign amid investigation

Portage Public Schools sent letters to parents saying Portage Central Elementary School Principal Bill Dygert and Woodland Elementary School Principal Allison Taylor had submitted their resignation, effective April 2. Dygert and Taylor had been on administrative leave since March 20, which a district spokesperson said was not a disciplinary action. The investigation was expected to be short and didn't involve students in any way.
