About: pearland, texas

Pearland is located in southeastern Texas, right outside of Houston. The city began in 1882 as a siding switch on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway and originally named Mark Belt. The area was known for its fruits trees—mainly pear trees—and was believed to be an "agricultural Eden." However, when most of the fruit trees were destroyed during the Galveston hurricanes of 1900 and 1915, the area was prone to a period of desertification. In 1934, when oil was discovered in the area, the population grew significantly.

We can't afford to build cities the way we built Houston anymore

Want to design a city to maximize flood damage? Start on very flat land - any kind of slope will help water flow out of town. Next you'd want to create incentives for people to build the city wide and low; by covering a large area with concrete and asphalt, you collect more water whenever it rains.
