Falling gas prices to fuel holiday trips

By David Zoeller The Paducah Sun While the July 4 holiday is approaching, no major fireworks are expected at the gas pump as the average price of fuel continues to drop locally and nationally. Average retail gasoline prices in Kentucky have fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.12 a gallon, according to a survey of 2,623 gas outlets by GasBuddy, a website that tracks gas prices.

Heath High School memorial to be relocated

Three students died in the incident, and five were injured. "It was the only [school shooting], to my knowledge, where the victims were using their first amendment rights, because they were in a prayer circle," Steve Shelby said.

Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon reports that on Friday at 10:30 a.m., deputies responded to a two-car crash on US 45 North in front of the old General Tire plant. The investigation showed that a car operated by Sarita Robinson, 56, of Paducah, was traveling south on US 45 North when her vehicle hydroplaned in a heavy rain storm.

According to McCracken County deputies, they responded to a report of vehicle tracks leading from I-24 onto the eastbound grassy shoulder at the 13.5 mile marker at Clarks River. Deputies found that the tracks led into a wooded area and down a large overgrown embankment.

New memorial planned for 1997 Kentucky school shooting

The Paducah Sun reports that organizers are seeking public donations for the memorial commemorating the shooting at Heath High School that left three students dead and others injured. Plans to develop a new memorial began earlier this year when community members lobbied the McCracken County School Board to approve relocating pieces of an existing memorial at Heath Middle School to a more accessible site.

Bardwell woman admits to killing husband

By Kat Russell The Paducah Sun BARDWELL -- With less than a week before her trial was scheduled to begin, a Bardwell woman accused of killing her husband and shooting another man, accepted a plea agreement Tuesday in Carlisle Circuit Court. Originally charged with murder and four counts attempted murder, Martha Ligon, 68, pleaded "guilty but mentally ill" to amended charges of first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and second-degree wanton endangerment.

Although the fire marshal's work is finished, Kuhn said the office continues to assist other parties still conducting investigations.
