The first people to settle in what is now Mount Prospect, Illinois were primarily from New England. However, in the early 1840s, the majority of these settlers left for various reasons such as moving west for gold or religious reasons, or moving back east. In 1848 a large wave of German immigrants came to America and moved out west. Mount Prospect was primarily settled by Lutheran Germans whose hopes were to establish a community. They were successful in their goal, producing a German speaking, farming community.

A Bluffton clothing store was the victim of theft again March 16 - the sixth such theft since November - when four women took $3,300 in items before being caught by Beaufort County Sheriff's deputies.
