It is believed that the city was named in honor of Princess Mishawaka, the daughter of a Shawnee Chief. According to legend, the Shawnee tribe was permitted to settle on lands owned by the Potawatomi tribe. The Potawatomi Chief, Grey Wolf, fell in love with Princess Mishawaka who did not return his feelings and who was in love with a white trapper named Deadshot. When a war between the tribes began Grey Wolf captured Princess Mishawaka, threatening to kill her unless she agreed to marriage.
