State public defenders hit the road to save money

Attorney Sean F. Kelly represents clients who can't afford to pay for an attorney and supervises the other public defenders at the state courthouse on Broad Street in New London. Once a month or so, under a cost-saving measure implemented a year ago by the Division of Public Defender Services, Kelly drives to the Norwich courthouse, where he handles 20 additional cases of indigent clients.  Attorney Shawn G. Tiernan, who also works in the public defender's office at the Broad Street courthouse known as Geographical Area 10, occasionally drives to Middletown to represent public defender clients. Another co-worker, attorney Jassette A. Henry, travels to New Haven to serve as the public defender for a client.

Suicide deterrents sought for Connecticut bridge

Connecticut transportation officials are planning major work on a bridge from which a man threw his baby boy to his death before jumping himself, and local officials are calling for suicide deterrents as part of the project. A state Transportation Department spokesman tells the Hartford Courant the $37 million project on the four-lane Arrigoni Bridge over the Connecticut River between Middletown and Portland is scheduled to start in 2019.

Lawsuit amid college's coed fraternity rule goes to trial

Testimony has gotten underway in a lawsuit against a private liberal arts college in Connecticut over its revocation of a fraternity's housing status after the school required fraternities to admit women. The Hartford Courant reports that Wesleyan University President Michael Roth testified Thursday that he shut down Delta Kappa Epsilon because he did not believe the local chapter was serious about the requirement.
