In the 1800s, Meriden, Connecticut, was nicknamed "The Silver City." This was because there were a large number of cutlery and related products, which were manufactured in Meriden by companies such as International Silver and Meriden Cutlery. Also, in 1832, Charles Parker and his brother founded a manufacturing factory that produced steam engines, train wheels, printing presses, and piano stools. The factory was named Parker's Meriden Machine Company. During the Civil War, the company was contracted by the Union to produce over 10,000 repeating rifles and 15,000 Springfield rifles.

Police: Man burned own store, painted racist graffiti as cover

Police have arrested the owner of a local liquor store who they said set fire to the building and used racial slurs and swastikas to cover up his crime. Scott Young , the owner of Rooster Wine and Liquor store on South Main Street, was arrested Thursday shortly after he was released from the Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, where he was being treated for an illness unrelated to the crime.

State Delays Monitoring of Home Health Workers Until System Problems Are Addressed

The state has agreed to delay the electronic monitoring of visiting nurses and other home medical providers for two months while problems with the "visit verification" system are ironed out. The monitoring was set to begin Wednesday, but Rep. Cathy Abercrombie, D-Meriden, and other legislative leaders met with officials of the Department of Social Services and Office of Police and Management, and asked that the program be suspended until system drawbacks can be examined and solved.
