About: manteca, california

Manteca is located in central California in San Joaquin County. The city was founded by Joshua Cowell in 1861. He had laid claim to over 1,000 acres and built houses on what is now known as downtown Manteca. When it came time for residents to choose a name for their new town, they chose "Cowell Station." Unfortunately, the name "Cowell Station" had already been taken by a nearby town and the residents were forced to choose a new name. They decided on "Monteca," but the railroad misprinted it as "Manteca," which is Spanish for lard.
