Manteca is located in central California in San Joaquin County. The city was founded by Joshua Cowell in 1861. He had laid claim to over 1,000 acres and built houses on what is now known as downtown Manteca. When it came time for residents to choose a name for their new town, they chose "Cowell Station." Unfortunately, the name "Cowell Station" had already been taken by a nearby town and the residents were forced to choose a new name. They decided on "Monteca," but the railroad misprinted it as "Manteca," which is Spanish for lard.

MANTECA - Sunday morning's destructive fire that wiped out almost a quarter of the luxury apartments under construction in southeast Manteca has not dissuaded the developers from completing the project, but it will delay the planned July opening. The first of 154 units at the Tesoro Apartments at Van Ryn Avenue and East Atherton Drive were expected to be occupied in three months, but now that date has been pushed back indefinitely until rebuilding can begin, according to the site's construction superintendent for builder Atherton Homes.

3 arrested in shooting, drug sales

Three men from Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties were taken into custody late last week after an investigation into a March shooting that left three people injured, Manteca police reported. Anthony Hasse, 20, and Trevor Reagin, 23, both of Modesto, and 21-year-old Elijah Wolfson of Lathrop were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy on Friday after the Manteca police SWAT team, with help from Modesto police and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, served search warrants in Manteca, Lathrop, Modesto and Crescent City, according to police.

Pipe bomb scare in Manteca

Police received a report of a suspected pipe bomb found about 11:10 this morning in the area of the 200 block of Jessie Ave. The suspected device was lying on the ground near a residential fence that borders the northwest side of Southside Park in the 400 block of Oregon St. The immediate area was evacuated and the device was rendered safe by the San Joaquin County Bomb Squad. After being rendered safe, the device was determined to be inert.

A judge granted a motion Monday afternoon allowing attorneys to inspect the personnel records of a county correctional officer who is charged with striking a defenseless inmate last year. The San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office released a 2017 surveillance video earlier this month that showed Correctional Officer Matthew Mettler striking the inmate, identified in court records as Emmanuel Reyes.

3 juveniles arrested over Weston Ranch threats

Three juveniles have been arrested in connection with two anonymous posts on social media earlier this week threatening to commit a shooting at Weston Ranch High school, Stockton police reported Friday. Detectives and officers were able to identify the 14-year-old Weston Ranch High student who allegedly made the first threat, and a 15-year-old former Weston Ranch High student and a 14-year-old Manteca One Ambition School student who allegedly made the second threat, contacted them at their homes and subsequently booked them into the San Joaquin County Juvenile Justice Center.
