Manteca is located in central California in San Joaquin County. The city was founded by Joshua Cowell in 1861. He had laid claim to over 1,000 acres and built houses on what is now known as downtown Manteca. When it came time for residents to choose a name for their new town, they chose "Cowell Station." Unfortunately, the name "Cowell Station" had already been taken by a nearby town and the residents were forced to choose a new name. OES: Residents prepare for levee break, evacuations

The San Joaquin River is expected to reach a water level that could pose a threat to the levees early next week, the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services said. OES expects water levels to reach a high enough level that it could breach the levees in the Manteca area, which could lead to localized flooding.
