Part of the Washington metropolitan area Manassas was host to the first large land battle of the American Civil Was, the First Battle of Bull Run. The city will honor the 150th anniversary of this battle in 2011. The area only grew into a city after the war, beginning in 1873. Today the city is a sprawling of suburb of D.C., and is home to many residents who commute for work.
