Longmont was named after Longs Peak, which is a prominent mountain named for explorer Stephen H. Long. "Mont" means mountain in French. Several Native American tribes including the Cheyenne, the Dakota, the Arapaho, the Kiowa, and the Comanche hunted buffalo herds through the area. In 1871 a group of Chicagoans founded a small town in Colorado and named it the Chicago-Colorado Colony. The town flourished as an agricultural community and was later renamed Longmont. A 21-year-old Longmont man could faces charges related to the theft of a pickup truck from a car dealership early Monday. After a terminated pursuit and Lafayette police's assistance in throwing "stop sticks" in front of the stolen truck, the driver, Omari Lyle, was arrested at 1:44 a.m. Monday on suspicion of stealing several keys and the truck from R&D Motors, 128 Third Ave. According to police reports, an officer responded at 12:01 a.m. Monday after an employee who lives just north of the business witnessed somebody driving away from the dealership lot in a 2002 red Dodge Ram 1500.

Burning trash blamed for grass fire near Longmont

Mountain View Fire Rescue investigators determined the fire between Longmont and Frederick on Monday started because someone was burning trash and high winds caused the fire to spread, said Emma Douglas, agency spokeswoman. Firefighters from multiple agencies battled the 30-acre grass fire that burned a barn, an attached garage and damaged one house, fire officials said.
