Longmont was named after Longs Peak, which is a prominent mountain named for explorer Stephen H. Long. "Mont" means mountain in French. Several Native American tribes including the Cheyenne, the Dakota, the Arapaho, the Kiowa, and the Comanche hunted buffalo herds through the area. In 1871 a group of Chicagoans founded a small town in Colorado and named it the Chicago-Colorado Colony. The town flourished as an agricultural community and was later renamed Longmont.
