About: lompoc, california

The land now known as Lompoc was originally inhabited by the Chumash Native American tribe. The name of the city was actually derived from the Chumash word "Lum Poc." The Mexican government granted the land around present day Lompoc as the Rancho Lompoc Land Grant in 1837. When the United States gained control of the California territory after the Mexican-American War, the valley was bought by Thomas Diblee and William Welles Hollister, and the land was established as a temperance colony. At first the town was called new Vineland, but residents later changed the name to Lompoc.
