Jacksonville is a suburb 15 miles northeast of Little Rock and was named for Mr. Nicholas Jackson. He donated land to the Cairo & Fulton Railroad for a railroad right-of-way in 1870. A community formed around the railroad depot eventually forming the town of Jacksonville which was incorporated in 1941. The Battle of Reed's Bridge Marker is found in Jacksonville. It memorializes Confederate troops who prevented Union troops from moving toward Little Rock during the Civil War. Unique to Jacksonville are the Museum of Military History and the Guitar Museum.

City lists police chief finalists

Jacksonville's mayor on Sunday identified the three finalists vying to become the city's new police chief, a position that has been a consistent source of controversy and uncertainty for the city over the past year. The finalists include Christopher Chapmond, an assistant police chief with the Hot Springs Police Department; James Jones, a security and legal consultant in Michigan; and James Bacon, a former Russellville police chief who now works at a security company.

Lanes of U.S. 67/167 to close

Work on a $79.2 million project to widen a 4.6-mile section of U.S. 67/167 between Jacksonville and Cabot will require multiple lane closings beginning Monday, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said. Describing "chaos" in the Jacksonville Police Department, five officers sued on Wednesday to remove the mayor's designated Police-Department director, stating that City Attorney Bob Bamburg is holding the job illegally. The lawsuit says state law bars Bamburg from holding the position because he's not a police chief and because elected officials are prohibited from simultaneously holding two city jobs.

Bail reduced for suspect in crimes in three states

A Pulaski County circuit judge has set bail at $100,000, down from $500,000, for a 25-year-old Jacksonville man facing federal kidnapping charges in Minnesota and suspected in the death of his girlfriend, whose burning body was found in New Orleans. Defense attorney David Sudduth argued for the bail reduction, since in Arkansas, Joseph Sean-Anthony "Joey" Porter is charged only with theft by receiving involving a car stolen from New Orleans.
