Jacksonville is a suburb 15 miles northeast of Little Rock and was named for Mr. Nicholas Jackson. He donated land to the Cairo & Fulton Railroad for a railroad right-of-way in 1870. A community formed around the railroad depot eventually forming the town of Jacksonville which was incorporated in 1941. The Battle of Reed's Bridge Marker is found in Jacksonville. It memorializes Confederate troops who prevented Union troops from moving toward Little Rock during the Civil War. Unique to Jacksonville are the Museum of Military History and the Guitar Museum.

JPs add recycling for 17,700 in county

The Pulaski County Quorum Court approved the addition of recycling services for the 17,700 residents living in the unincorporated areas of the county. Monthly sanitation rates -- which also include weekly garbage collection, bulk item pickup, limbs and brush pickup, and old tire collection -- will increase to $26.58 monthly.

U.S. 67/167 noise-wall proposal amended

A proposal to install noise walls along U.S. 67/167 in Jacksonville has been modified in response to public input, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said Monday. Portions of the proposed noise wall that would block the visibility of commercial properties from the highway will be removed based on comments from residents, commercial property owners and local officials at a March 9 meeting convened to discuss the noise wall, according to the department.

NLR police pursuit ends in fatal shooting of driver

A man who led officers on a car chase was fatally shot Thursday by North Little Rock police after he moved toward an officer with a knife he had used to stab a police dog twice in the face, authorities said. The North Little Rock Police Department said it received a call Thursday morning that a man was involved in a disturbance with a woman in Jacksonville, then fled the scene in a vehicle.

The Walton Arts Center's Voice Jam A Cappella festival will return this spring, and nationally-known group Naturally 7 will kick off the event with a headlining show. The band, known for their unique ability to use only their voices to create every backing instrument heard in their songs, will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 31. The performance is part of the third annual Voice Jam Festival, which will also include top vocal groups from around the country competing on Saturday, April 1 to become this year's champion.

Man, 23, gets 5 years in bid to bribe victim

A 23-year-old Jacksonville man on Monday accepted a five-year prison sentence for trying to bribe a robbery victim to stop cooperating with prosecutors. Justin D'Meyers Jones pleaded guilty to witness bribery, a Class C felony that carries a 10-year maximum.

Trial probable in school suit, judge advised

An attorney for black students in a long-running Pulaski County school desegregation lawsuit predicted Tuesday that a trial will be necessary to resolve staffing and facility disputes with the new Jacksonville/North Pulaski School District. Rep. John Walker, D-Little Rock, told U.S. District Judge D. Price Marshall Jr. that his clients -- the Joshua intervenors -- are likely to reach an agreement with the Pulaski County Special School District on school staffing requirements.

Police arrested a homeless man Saturday night after he was accused of stabbing a person in North Little Rock, according to a police report. Officers were called to a report of a stabbing Saturday and found Leshon Robinson, 31, standing at East Second and North Beech streets, the report said.

On I-40, rig flips, driver dies

A Bismarck man died after the tractor-trailer he was driving Thursday morning crossed the median on Interstate 40 and overturned in Prairie County, according to state police. Timothy Ray Cockman, 48, was traveling east on I-40 at mile marker 190, about 5 miles west of Fredonia, around 6 a.m., when his Freightliner went through cables, crossed the median into westbound traffic and overturned, the Arkansas State Police said in a preliminary report.

"I would pledge to veto any bills that would weaken the Freedom of Information laws in this state," he said at that March meeting.
