About: holyoke, massachusetts

Holyoke is located in western central Massachusetts. It was named after Elizur Holyoke, an explorer who explored the area that is now known as Holyoke in the 1660s. Not many people resided in the city until the Holyoke Canal System and Dam were constructed in the mid 1800s, spurring construction of several water-powered mills, chiefly paper mills. The population of the city exploded going from 4,600 in 1885 to 60,000 in 1920. Holyoke's paper industry led to its nickname of "Paper City."
