A local program designed to introduce middle and high school students to the legal system and its potential to foster social change is moving into a scholarship program to inspire that group to greater achievements. Lloyd Johnson, a retired career prosecutor and president of the Savannah 100 Foundation Inc., has announced creation of a scholarship fund to add incentives to Court's in Session legal mentoring program now in its first year.

Teen killed in shooting was reportedly standing up for a friend

The victim in Wednesday's shooting at Eagles Landing Subdivision is described as a fiercely loyal teen who "loved those around him with all he had," and gave up his life while standing up for a friend. The victim, Clyde A. Weeks, 19, was killed after a fight outside a home on Jubail Drive, according to Hinesville Police.

Film crews may need permits

Looking to avoid a tragedy similar to the 2015 death of a film crew member in Wayne County, the Liberty County Convention and Visitors Bureau is asking that those looking to film in Hinesville be required to get a permit. Leah Poole, director of the LCCVBureau, presented a draft of an ordinance requiring the permits to the Hinesville City Council on Thursday.

A man wanted for murder in Washington state has been arrested in Liberty County thanks to multiple law enforcement agencies. Officials say on Thursday at approximately 12:45 p.m., the Savannah Field Office of the FBI contacted the Liberty County Sheriff's Office to advised them that Demetrius Jackson, who was wanted out of Tacoma, Washington, for an alleged murder, was in the Hinesville area.

University officials discuss merger

The presidents of Georgia Southern and Armstrong State universities talked consolidation during a forum at Tuesday's meeting of the Hinesville Rotary Club. It included remarks from Dr. Jamie Herbert of Georgia Southern and Dr. Linda Bleicken of Armstrong State, who also participated in a question and answer session regarding the merger of the two schools, which was announced Jan. 11. Hebert will lead implementation of the consolidation, which is scheduled to take place in January 2018, and classes won't begin until the fall.
