Georgia jobless rate dips; Columbus adds 100 jobs year over year

Job creation across Georgia helped nudge the state's unemployment rate lower, from 5.5 percent in January to 5.3 percent in February, the Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday. "Our unemployment rate fell as Georgia set new record highs for the number of people employed and for the size of our labor force, which crossed the 5 million mark for the first time," said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

Bond set for man accused of killing teen

Philomen S. Jackson was charged with one count of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm for the killing of Clyde Austin Weeks during an altercation Feb. 15. Philemon S. Jackson had bond set at $500,000 cash or $1 million property by Liberty County Superior Court Judge Robert Russell. Jackson, 21, is charged with one count of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies.

Community mourns passing of 9-1-1 director

Liberty County Administrator Joey Brown called Tom Wahl one of the most knowledgeable 911 directors in the state and a man who had a lasting impact on Liberty County's emergency communications. Tuesday, friends and family mourned Wahl's passing.

Liberty 911 director found dead in home

Liberty County 911 Director Tom Wahl was found dead Monday at his home in Hinesville, according to Deputy Coroner Terry Satterfield. Satterfield said Wahl apparently passed away sometime Sunday, and when he didn't show up for work Monday fellow employees became concerned and summoned police.

Second arrest made in deaths of two Fort Stewart soldiers

Hinesville police have made another arrest in the March 5 death of two Fort Stewart soldiers in a Hinesville townhome. Specialist Phillip E. Thompson was taken into custody late Thursday night by Fort Stewart Criminal Investigation Division agents and turned over to HPD, according to authorities.
