A Wayne State University professor who investigated the cause of Legionnaires' disease outbreaks here described Flint River water as a "recipe for Legionella growth" in court testimony Wednesday, Nov. 15. Shawn McElmurry, associate professor of civil engineering at Wayne State University, said once the city's water source was changed to the Flint River in April 2014, it lacked chlorine residual and contained both organic matter and iron, creating a breeding ground for the bacteria that can lead to Legionnaires'.
